FDC will Protest Against the Persecution of Liu Xiaobo
Date: June 30, 20-17
Time of Protest: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
Time for Press Conference: 11:30 am - 12:00 pm
Location: in front of the Chinese Consulate, 240 St. George St. Toronto, ON M5R 2N5
Host: Federation for a Democratic China (FDC)
Background:
We were astonished to learn that Liu Xiaobo, a Chinese dissident and Nobel Peace Laureate, was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer.
Liu Xiaobo is known for his promotion of peace, rational and non-violence in China. He was one of the initiators Charter 08, because of which he was sentenced 11 years in prison in 2010. Liu Xia, his wife, though never charged or tried in court, had been under house arrest and isolated ever since. We have a strong reason to suspect, that Liu's illness is a result of Chinese authorities' persecution. We condemn such persecutions.
We urge the Chinese government to release Liu Xiaobo immediately, and allow him and his wife to receive medical care out of China.
We also urge the Canadian government to apply pressure to China and ask them to release all political prisoners, especially those who has ties with Canada. Such as:
Dr. Wang Bingzhang, a McGill graduate and Canadian resident. A number of his direct relatives are Canadian citizens.
Qin Yongmin, Li Bifeng, Dong Guangping, and Jiang Yefei, whose direct relatives are residents of Canada.
We hope Canadian communities stay concerned about Liu Xiaobo's health, and the overall condition of China's Human right status.
